Assignment for Monday, January 11

(1) Read and "point to" William Stafford's "A Way of Writing." To "point to" a piece means to highlight, underline, or write a list of words, phrases, lines, or passages that provoked you or promoted understanding.



(2) Freewrite #4: Peter Elbow writes that we can find "good bits" amidst the garbage that makes up so much of our freewriting. Choose one of "the good bits" from from Freewrite #3 and write one page about that good bit in your notebook. Remember, keep your hand moving and lose control. Don't edit yourself!


Assignment for Wednesday, January 13

1. Read pgs. 3-15 in Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird and "point to" compelling words, phrases, lines, or passages with a highlighter. You should aim for AT :LEAST one highlight per page.

2. Read Chapter 2 in Writing True and use one of the "Eight Ideas for Getting Started" on pg. 30-31 as the inspiration for a one-page entry in your notebook (Freewrite #5)..

1. Write 1.5 pages from a "Masked Perspective" ("A Martian Sends a Postcard Home") aboiut one of the topics from your cluster (Freewrite #9).

Assignment for Wednesday, Jan 20:
1. Read Chapter 4 in Writing True and write 2 pages in response on the "Ways In" at the end of the chapter (Freewrite #10).

Assignment for Thursday, Jan 21:
1. Review your freewrite entries in your notebook.
2. Choose your best excerpt from the notebook and type it up as a Word Document. Must be between 95-105 words. No longer, no shorter. Print 4 copies to bring to class.

1. Highlight examples of good word choice in your classmates' 100 word excerpt.
2.Write a 7-10 commentary about your classmates' word choice in their 100word exceprt. Use the sheet itself. Only discuss the writer's word choice strengths.

1. Find a passge from a book, essay etc. that you like and type of a 100-word excerpt from that novel.
2. Under the paragraph, write 7-10 sentences on how word choice impacts the meaning/effect of the excerpt. Be specific.

1. Based on our discussion of "Island" by Gretel Ehrlrich, review Thursday and Friday's freewrites write a two-page entry in your notebook in which you further develop a detail that you feel helps you understand something new or makes a deeper connection with some other aspect of your experience. In other words, write 2 pages about a detail that seems to be related to something else you want to talk about, that seems to be related to some other "island of detail." Build a detail archipelago!!!!

1. Friday 2/12 before class, ALL STUDENTS must create a Google Doc that features 3 100-150 word excerpts from your place freewrites and then invite the entire class as collaborators.

Assignment for Wednesday, February 17:

1. Prepare a typed,150 word printed draft of a place essay to read aloud in class. Use your freewrites, the excerpts you and your classmates selected, and your own good writer's sense in preparation of this assignment.

2. If you missed Friday's class, you must initial the excerpt on each of your classmates' Google Docs invite that you think has the has the most potential for development. You should initial 18 documents total (17 if Evan is still out).

1.Provide assigned feedback for Google Docs jigsaw exercise. First collaborator: How hard was rearrangment on a scale of 1-10? Explain your answer in 10-12 sentences and initial. Second collaborator: Respond to the first collaborator. Do you think the paragraph they have rearranged actually works from an organizational standpoint?

2. Email me one grammar problem that you typically have.
